In Defence of The Hamburger Menu

Over the last year or so there have been a lot of articles all decrying the use of the hamburger icon for navigation. The icon itself isn’t a hamburger, it’s just three horizontal lines that resemble one. In the early days of the iPhone and rise of mobile sites, the hamburger icon was a popular choice for showing a menu. And depending on which sites and applications you use, it might still be.

Are "Confirm Email" Fields Relevant Any More?

An interesting topic I thought would be better served as a post. Are email confirmation fields still needed in modern web forms? Recently I was tasked with building a registration form. This form had a lot of fields in it including an email and confirm email field. I made the case for removing it because I felt another field was just a barrier to entry and in the age of “Sign Up Using Facebook” buttons anyway, the tolerance people have for long forms has dwindled.

UX: Where Is The Best Place To Put Social Media Buttons?

As a front-ender developer I am often tasked with helping solve user interface and accessibility issues in liaison with designers. Headings, body copy and even image placement is a pretty tried and tested thing, however where do you put the social buttons? Do you put them above your content headings? Do you put them below your content headings? Do you put them at the end of your content? Do you put them in the middle of your content? There are some rules of thumb you should abide by when deciding where to place social media buttons:
