Well, Apple have finally announced further details of their anticipated Apple Watch and I am seriously not impressed.
The anticipation for the event was high, expectations even higher considering Apple like to tout themselves as this handheld and wearables design messiah.
The incestuous fanboy brethren who live for every word their cult leader Tim Cook tells them also help further propel this grandiose perception of God-like perfection.
While the Apple Watch looks quite decent, it is definitely not the best looking smart watch out there. And when compared to a traditional timepiece, it does not matter if you have a sapphire coated screen, you cannot compete with the look and feel of a real watch.
There are tonnes of different development methodologies and styles out there. You have test driven development, rapid application development, feature driven development and a whole bunch of other types of development approaches you can take.
My favourite approach for personal projects is API Driven Development. You’re probably wondering if it is even a real thing. Before writing this article I wasn’t even sure myself. Sure enough, I found some posts on the subject of API Driven Development proving that I am not crazy and that API Driven Development is a real thing.
Corporate social networks are not a new premise. The corporate social network Yammer which was acquired by Microsoft in 2012 has been slowly toiling away behind the scenes, but you don’t really hear about it. I think it is safe to say Yammer has failed.
Facebook reportedly have been readying a product called “Facebook for Work” which is exactly what it sounds like. An internal version of Facebook that allows internal communication within a company.
Javascript is an ever-growing language, especially now that releases for ECMAScript specifications now operate on a yearly release schedule. As such the importance of needing to know Javascript beyond just jQuery becomes even more important as the language grows in scope and quite quickly.
This isn’t a definitive guide that claims to be the holy grail of Javascript developer knowledge. There are definitely things I have missed, things I might be wrong about and things you might disagree with as being something every Javascript developer should know.
In 2014 Sony announced Project Morpheus a virtual reality headset in the same vain as Oculus Rift. Throughout the last year Sony has remained coy about whether or not Morpheus would even go beyond an experimental stage.
At GDC 2015, we got our answer. Sony is going balls deep on Project Morpheus. Impressive updated specs on the well-designed headset and the startling revelation that the Playstation 4 console can do 120 frames per second the headset needs.
Before we proceed, I want you to read this news.com.au story by a guy named Peter Baines who runs a charity called Hands Across The Water. Aptly titled, “Why giving money to charity makes you a tool”
As click-baiting as the title is, the story is partially about those who give money to charity but not much else. Baines then goes onto to make the point that people should be doing more than just donating money because it supposedly makes you a tool.
The only browser to support the BroadcastChannel API is Firefox 38 (at the time of writing this) which isn’t slated for release until May, 2015. If you are using Firefox Developer Edition, then you already have support for the BroadcastChannel API and you can start playing around with it now.
This new API opens up a world of possibilities, working around inherent limitations in the existing postMessage API we already have. The BroadcastChannel API is part of the WHATWG living HTML standard which can be seen here.
The Translink Go Card is the preferred choice for public transport in South East Queensland. An RFID touch-on/touch-off card and a series of card readers on train station platforms, buses, City Cycle and ferries.
Originally plagued with implementation issues that almost saw provider Cubic sued for the delays and widespread problems the Go Card rollout faced, the network is in a much more stable state these days.
With paper tickets for some zones almost costing double the price in comparison to a Go Card fare, the incentive to own and use a Go Card is very high.
If you were a startup trying to get an MVP out the door in 2010, admittedly you probably used or considered Ruby on Rails. In 2015 you are probably more than likely going to opt for Node.js instead. But why?
Once upon a time it seemed as if Ruby on Rails was destined for global dominance. Twitter was originally built on top of it before moving for scalability and performance reasons, but many companies still use Ruby on Rails.
I have been doing some development work in the online advertising space lately and as a result of it, I have become more mindful of which sites I block advertisements on and which sites I do not block advertisements on.
Nobody likes advertisements and while I still use Adblock Plus to block ads for a lot of sites, I do it in a more polite manner than most. If a site offers value to me, I find the content great and it is free, I disable Adblock on the site. It is a small gesture that goes a long way.
