You can edit any page imaginable in WordPress, except the 404 error page. Usually the 404 error page is only editable by opening up the 404.php file in your WordPress theme directory and changing the content that way. There are plugins which allow you to have custom 404 pages, but there is no point in using plugins if you can do it easily yourself.
Wouldn’t it just be simpler if you could edit your 404 page from within the pages menu in the WordPress dashboard? Well, you can.
In your functions.php file (located in your theme folder) add the following code:
In your 404.php file (located in your theme folder) add the following code:
You should now have a 404 page in the backend when edit is added to, is displayed whenever someone hits your 404 page. You can take things a step further and define sidebars and custom widgetised areas so you can display search widgets and anything else you like.
Step1: create new page, call it 404, check it’s ID
Step2: modify 404 page – add
<?php
$404= get_post( , ARRAY_A );
$title= $404[‘post_title];
$content= $404[‘post_content];
?>
Step3: echo title and content wherever you want on the page
oups, text part is missing
here is the code again:
EITHER English is not the first language of either of you guys, or you just don’t know how to write complete, commented instructions. Something is missing from the directions, because this is obviously not a simply copy and paste thing…there are some parts of the code that probably need to be edited, but I’m obviously missing it, because none of it works for me.
@Donna
Thanks for the constructive comment, Donna. I especially liked how you capitalised the first word of your comment, it really highlights just how important what you are about to say is. When I saw your comment, my first thought was: Now, this looks like a person who has something important to say. Truly inspiring stuff.
Thanks for the English lesson as well. I just looked at your site and I can see you are a very important developer with a fantastic grasp on not only the English language, but a great eye for design. The hard to read serif font you picked for the body text is wonderful, the images that don’t properly scale well on large resolution displays, BRILLIANT! (see Donna, still learning. You’re such a great teacher).
Although Donna, I do have my concerns. Your site has a section with the heading, “BEST AND LATEST WEB TECHNOLOGIES” I love BEST AND LATEST WEB TECHNOLOGIES, too. You and I are so alike. That’s so us.
I liked the blurb you have underneath as well:
> Your website will be created with the latest technologies, enabling us to create the most engaging and relevant website for your business.
It is very reassuring to know that someone of your calibre is creating such great web experiences. But I will admit, the fact you fail basic observational skills as well as basic WordPress skills that high school students have, it is quite troubling.
I do find it quite troubling on your services page you go on to say the following:
> WordPress Tutoring/Training : Do you have a site, and need to know how to maintain it? How to do updates (safely) and backups? We love to teach people to help themselves.
Seems this is a bit of a lie, no? You failed to understand this blog post or solve a simple problem on your own, how can anyone believe you are capable of tutoring or training anyone in WordPress?
Maybe next time, you should pay attention to the published and last updated dates in the post. This is a blog post from 2013, I barely work with WordPress anymore because I have better things to do with my time. This blog has been running since 2010 and I cannot go back and update blog posts from almost five years ago.
Is it really that hard to Google your own problems until you find a solution? Or better yet, READ the documentation yourself (see how I capitalised that again, Donna. I am learning).
Here is some free and up-to-date advice (because I know how important up-to-date, well-written information is to you):
Stop freeloading off of blogs expecting posts from 2013 to solve your problems for free. WordPress has had what, 5 major versions since then? Stand on your own two feet and do what every other decent developer does and keep looking until you find the solution.
You are an ass, I just barely started re-doing it. Of course it’s not finished, anyone with half a brain can see that. Duh…fucking child.
And I sure didn’t come here to solve any problems…that’s for damn sure. I just was curious because of the stupid name of your site, indicating again you are a mere child DWAYNE. And nice to know you let a troll hit a nerve so easily punk. Grow up.
I would love to see Donna’s website.
Nimitz,
If you can stomach it, it’s here: https://everythingit.us/ – fair warning, this site will mess with your eyes and your head.
Dwayne…if you are a pothead maybe it would, yes. Most normal people like it. I get positive comments, and plenty of traffic and business. So it works for me just fine. Still burning a year and half later I see…good. Still a child.
Well, i don’t know what Donna was whinging about in the first place!
This all worked just fine for me. I thought it was actually really nicely commented too :^)
I’m surprised there’s not a page view counter on Donna’s website. I’ve not seen a site like that since the 90s.
