October 21st, 2015 was Back To The Future Day. The day in which Marty travels into the future in the Delorean. Countless articles have focused on the lack of hoverboards, flying vehicles or ability to time travel.
Why isn’t anyone talking about dehydrated pizza?
In Back To The Future: Part II there is a scene where Marty McFly’s mother rehydrates a Pizza Hut Pizza in a Black and Decker Hydrater. The pizza expands from 4 inches in diameter to 15 inches in diameter in about 12 seconds.
This had more of a profound effect on me as a child than the prospect of a hoverboard did. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted a hoverboard, but the prospect of rehydrating a pizza in a matter of seconds was even more exciting and seemed more possible in my mind.
While there currently exists no way of rehydrating a pizza like seen in the movie, food hydration actually exists. In-fact, astronauts eat dehydrated food which is rehydrated by adding in water.
Is it possible?
At present, no. I doubt we would ever see the ability to dehydrate a pizza, then rehydrate it (toppings and all) and actually taste nice. Would you eat a pizza you have to add water to? Yuck.
The future of food might actually be exploring ways to cook food faster and more efficiently, not shrinking it down and using a hydrator manufactured by a company known for gardening tools to bring it back to normal size in a matter of seconds.
Hoverboards and flying cars are cool, but dehydrated pizzas are cooler. Just food for thought.
We have the air fryer!!
