The Most Useful Grid: 12 Column, 1200px Wide

Design · April 2, 2013

Although I am not a designer, it doesn’t stop me from trying and throughout my trials I’ve been experimenting with different grid systems.

I used 960.gs for a while but it seemed too small, so then I experimented with 1140px for a while and it was good, but I’ve since gone bigger and better and believe to have found one of the best grid templates for web design.

After previously trying a 15 column 1200px grid, I soon ran into some limitations, a major limitation being the fact 15 doesn’t evenly divide by two (which for a theme I’ve been designing is something I need).

Meet the 12 column, 1200px grid featuring 20px gutters and 80px wide columns. I was going to make it 24 columns, but decided 12 was more than enough and easier to divide in your head instead of 24. A 12 column grid is divisible by all the important numbers; 2, 3 and even 4.

Click here to download a Fireworks PNG which has the guides for columns and gutters added in, sorry no PSD, I only use Fireworks even though it has been discontinued. Try combining this grid with the use of the Semantic Grid System for awesome results and productivity.
