Getting media streaming to work with FetchTV

General · March 17, 2014

I am absolutely in love with FetchTV. It is quite a decent and affordable cable TV competitor, not only that, but it allows you to stream Youtube videos, movies and TV shows as well as the ability to use it as a local media streaming hub.

Whilst trying to get it to work with Windows Media Player after working out why the streaming service wouldn’t start, I realised FetchTV has problems with Windows Media Player shared content (sometimes it doesn’t see it). I searched for an alternative and found Plex.

Plex is an amazing media server that works with FetchTV out of the box. Install it, create an account and FetchTV won’t have a problem seeing it. Not only that, it has a beautiful management interface that allows you to group what is shared and how it is displayed including meta data.

Not only that, Plex works well with all operating systems including Mac OS and Linux. It seems to be the perfect solution for the ideal media server setup for not only FetchTV users, but anyone really.

I have not been able to find a Plex client for FetchTV. I have clients on Samsung TV etc that connect to Plex server running on my NAS, just can’t find a Fetch one.

Does this still work for you?
Running on a mac, fetch can’t see my plex server. Am I missing something?

What operating system are you on? If you’re using Windows, sometimes the Windows Firewall can block that kind of thing. Once you have the server enabled on your machine (whether it’s Mac OS or Windows) you should be able to go to “My Stuff” on the Fetch box and see something mentioning, “Plex Media Server” or equivalent. Also make sure both your Fetch box and computer running the Plex server are on the same network.

Thanks. Found this article and all is working with Plex running on a Synology NAS serving files to Fetch TV. The one issue is that whilst cover art shows on Plex it’s not visible on Fetch TV. Any ideas?
