Does The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Have A Design Flaw With Overly Weak Screens?

General · September 22, 2014

More cracked screens than a crack den full of Apple loving hipsters.

It hasn’t even been out that long and already, stories and images are emerging of countless iPhone 6’s breaking after being dropped just once. Not known for their ability to survive a drop from waist distance, the iPhone 6 appears to be shaping up as the most vulnerable of all iPhone models released so far.

During testing of the iPhone 6 for a review, Walt Mossberg actually dropped his iPhone 6 review phone and it broke the screen. While it continued to work, the glass was cracked. A scenario iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 users will be more than aware of.

During the first official droptest performed on a sidewalk in Sydney, the iPhone 6 faired alright when dropped onto the concrete, the iPhone 6 Plus however has proven to be incredibly weak. The iPhone 6 Plus cracked almost instantly after hitting the ground, comparatively I’ve dropped my S4 a couple of times in similar circumstances and the screen survived.

The glass in the iPhone 6 (both models) uses ion-strengthened glass opposed to the rumoured sapphire glass. Reportedly sapphire screens were considered, but during tests they were found to be weaker than the ion-strengthened glass currently used in the phone. And as has already been proven the ion-strengthened glass isn’t exactly that strong either.

In Apple’s desire to make their products lighter and thinner, are they compromising build integrity for the sake of shaving off a couple of millimeters from the thickness of their phones?

Make sure you buy that AppleCare for your iPhone and a decent case, because if you drop the iPhone 6, especially the iPhone 6 Plus, it will break. Don’t say you were not warned.
